Definitely Maybe – Worst Phrase of the English Language

Definitely Maybe…

I was highly disappointed to find out that this phrase was not included in the recent Reader’s Digest 10 most irritating phrases in English.  It definitely should be and it definitely should be number 1 – no not maybe…definitely!

Why I can’t stand the phrase “definitely maybe”

Definitely maybe was a play on words used by a recent Hollywood movie.  I dislike it all the more for that reason.  Why?  Because as I’ve often told the younger generation, it reflects the wishy-washiness of this new generation exactly – definitely!

It reflects their inability to commit and stick with a decision no matter what.  It reflects a lack of dedication and loyalty.  We need more stability than a “definitely maybe” type of attitude whether in relationships, in the workplace or when seeking what one wants to do in life.

The phrase definitely maybe reflects the inability by people like our new generation of teenagers to have a lack of ability to be decisive – to take a stand, and make a decision.  It reflects their wishy-washiness in what they believe and stand for, and how they want to live their lives.

People need to escape the “definitely maybe” mentality and bring some determination and decisiveness into their lives – some real sense of purpose and direction and not just a bunch of “definitely maybe” wishy-washiness!
