I believe this quote may have been stated by Bill Gates.  He seems like the type of individual to make such a comment.

This quote is a reflection on how something becomes more valuable when more people place value in the item…and in the information age, information has indeed become a valuable commodity.

Imagine knowing where gold or diamonds or oil were.  This information would be practically as valuable as the gold, diamonds or oil themselves.

But the meaning of this quote goes even further.  Imagine if information were the gold or oil itself…the very thing being sought or tapped into…is this not the case today?

And if there were an organization that had much of this information, would it not be a very powerful entity…because everyone would seek the information, need it, value it, depend on it and use it.

This reminds me of the internet…or of specific information on the Internet, or pergha-s a search engine or portal.  These are the new gold and diamond mines and oil wells to be tapped.  And the more that people use and rely on this, the more valuable this becomes.

What to do with this quote

Think for a moment in your life, your family’s life and even on your job what information has become so valuable that it is like a gold mine.  Perhaps it’s information about how to prevent getting diabetes, or how to prevent a disease.

Would you say that’s more valuable;e than gold or diamonds? I say yes…I’d rather have my health any day than all of the money in the world.  No amount of money can by health or love.

And though it can buy a lot of things, just remember that information never buys money, but that money buys information and that information is what often gives the power to earn money in the first place.  Information has truly become a new form of wealth.

When I first heard this quote, I thought of a well known bible teacher who was so vehement and mean spirited about what he taught and said that regardless of how true some of the points he made were, and regardless of the evidence he had or may have had to back it up, weighty argument and points – they were all defeated merely by his bigoted approach.

His mean-spiritedness and bigotry crushed his message.  There was no way for him to say “don’t confuse me with the facts” because it was that bad.

What to do with this famous saying

Realize that it is not expedient to argue something that is true in such a vehement or overzealous that will perhaps ruin the very message and tarnish the very facts we wish to present.

Anything that is to be presented should be done so in a smarter way, not a hostile way.  Otherwise we kill the truth we tried to protect and share.

At this moment in time…

This usually means you are summarizing a key point at a certain moment and qualifying it by saying that “while this may hold true now, it is subject to change, so don’t hold me to this because I can’t guarantee the accuracy for very long”.  So you say “At this moment in time…” to qualify your guarantee of accuracy.

Reader’s Digest recently said this was one of the most irritating English phrases but I disagree.  Why would they say that?  Thoughts?  I think we need an “out” like this from time to time.

This usually means you are giving your personal opinion based on your own experience…so you say  “I personally…”

I think saying ‘I personally” allows us to say things which we feel strongly about without coming across as trying to proselytize others or influence them when we really are trying to do so.

Using “I personally” is a way for us to say something directly, indirectly!  I’m glad we have such a tool in the English language to do so.

Yes, how true this is. When I was 20, I had a will that wouldn’t quit. In my 30’s some of that faded a bit and the wit did begin to take over…whether by being witty or by using wit to get things dine rather than necessarily by sheer will.

I guess I have yet to personally experience the judgment part since I’m not yet 40 but am getting close.

No matter, I’ve seen it enough…experience and maturity combine to form judgment…and that’s why most CEOs or senior executives are 40 or older…that’s where better judgment resides. Even at 30 I’m willing to admit this…

What to do with this famous saying:

Try to use a bit more of the other principles in age groups you are not in. If you’re in your 30’, keep your 20’s energy but try to judge like you’re in your 40’s, and have the maturity if you can (I know, some of that only comes with age and experience).

Nonetheless, try your best. If you’re in your 20’s, be smart and witty yet focus on maturity! For those in their 40’s and beyond, keep an open mind and don’t be so stubborn, yet also don’t dwell on things too long, move on!

Everyone MUST remember this.

This is particularly true for public servants, military, police, fire and other personnel who risk to serve and protect.

The most tragic example of forgetting the wisdom of these words id Abu Ghraib prison abuse, or things like the My Lai Massacre.

These horrible things that took place were barbaric.  Soldiers and public servants are citizens, and if they cease to be citizens, then they become barbarians and mercenaries.

Not only is the image of this bad, more important the reality of it is terrible because it contradicts the very things that we are fighting for and base our existence on. Freedom.  Justice and the American way.

We are not criminals.  So lets not act like it no matter what.  Otherwise we need to stop fighting and join the enemy because we just became like them and embraced their philosophy anyhow.

We then become our own worst enemy and have defeated ourselves and our cause, and the foundations on which we stand.

We must get rid of Machiavellian thinking…

We are a nation of laws, of freedom, democracy, liberty, justice and goodness.  We stand for principles based on moral absolutes of right and wrong, traced back to the Bible.  No one is above the law.  No one is below the law.

Citizenship may become somewhat modified in direct combat, but even so there remains a basic responsibility called chivalry, honor, a code of conduct and the Geneva Conventions.

These would not exist if there were no need to counterbalance the horror of warfare considering the tendencies of those terrified and hurt or angered and troubled by war may also be otherwise terrible and out of control in rash response and retaliation.

Teach it to every public servant.  Make them know it, understand it, repeat it and practice it so that we may never become like those bent on evil and destruction, pretending to care for a principle of faith and goodness, while continually denying the same in all that they do.

Otherwise we are no better than those we fight, and we contradict the very principles we are fighting for and set those once bondaged, free from.

A quick comment:

A while back, Ronald Reagan passed away.  His charisma and beliefs have had a profound effect on history.  Yet his strength is that he realized that what we’d considered self-achieved and self-wrought was actually made to be all along…was actually divine by design and purpose.

It is because of how things transpired when America became a nation that the world is still in order and that the timetable of end-times has not yet played out.

The end of the world is as certain as every other prophecy that has come true in the bible, such as the coming of the messiah the first time when he died on a cross rather than come as a king, as the second time around will prove, though not before a great and startling, terrible counterfeit to be sure.

Yet even so, we may necessarily be entirely privy of this divine purpose and therefore should not be to sure of ourselves or our own purpose.

As quick as we came, we can be gone…and there will then be an exceeding rush of chaos to fill this void of good.

The pint of this quote is not to find self satisfaction or aggrandizement but instead to realize divine purposed are great and in control and are not necessarily known or understood.

Nevertheless they should be acknowledged and respected and the big picture can be appreciated with sincerity and hope.

Actually often (not just sometimes) No News is Good News!

Ever had a boss who doesn’t compliment you much or say too many good things, but is the first to point out your faults, mistakes and the bad stuff?

Ever go through several days or even weeks without hearing anything good or bad?  Well, then cheer up…because…

No news is good news with these kinds of people!  Yes, the fact is most bosses I’ve dealt with seem to take this approach.  It’s not that they mean to be thoughtless or indifferent…just that they just don’t remember nor often have the actual time to think to be positive.

I know…not the greatest leadership style or management trait…but also…here’s what is important:

You probably can’t change them
Determine if they’re a “no news is good news” kind of person
If they are…better that you don’t hear anything than hear something negative!

This Too Shall Pass

Ever heard this saying before?  What does it mean?

We often find ourselves in situations where we wish we could be somewhere else, like on a beach somewhere thousands of miles away, not having to worry about the situation before us or what’s coming.

Unfortunately that may not be possible or realistic. Nonetheless, there’s a valuable saying for this situation that can help you right now…

It goes like this, “This Too Shall Pass”

It means that no matter how tough your current issue, dilemma or situation, in due time it will go away and you’ll continue to live on afterward.

That’s important to understand because it means that tough times and difficulties don’t last forever. The situation you’re in won’t always be that way. This is comforting to know.

I have used this saying to ease my nerves and worry in situations where tensions were high and things were difficult, and have become more easygoing and patient in some areas as a result.

Things to Remember

• If it seems like it’s huge and overwhelming

• If it seems like it will last forever

• If it is not where you want to be or what you want to do

• If It’s Not Too Good…

No matter how bad it gets, you MUST remind yourself of these comforting words, “This Too Shall Pass”. These are words worth thinking about.

I’ve used them on several occasions. In some situations, each day or every week even. But rest assured, bad times will pass by. All you have to do is get through them.

There will be better days. Don’t forget this. The next time you find yourself in any mess no matter what it is, just tell yourself these words when you need them…“This Too Shall Pass!”

Why Quote This?

I think the young folks forget that life is tough. Parents today are too easy on their kids, and the kids don’t learn a thing by this. In a world and a life so tough, parents aren’t always able to bail their kids out nor should they.

If they do, the kids stay dependent, and never become self-sufficient or productive citizens.

I Should Know

I’m a first generation immigrant living in the U.S. without any relatives here. I have an understanding of how an orphan must feel, to an extent. There is a terrible feeling of loneliness that can engulf you.

I know what it’s like to be alone, in a tough world, often in situations where the only choice is to do or die. Like in the movie The Pursuit of Happyness, a movie I can truly relate to.

I have similar tales, and I not just watched the movie, but I felt it, because it struck home! There is a difference between watching something for entertainment, versus feeling something you can definitely relate to.

Thank God I learned how to make it the old fashioned way, by earning it, and by depending on God. He deserves all the credit. So I can’t really say I was all alone. And I must say, IT WAS STILL TOUGH!

Easy or Difficult?

If I had a choice between the two, I would more often choose easy. Honestly who wouldn’t? But the reason why I would be careful about this is because I know I wouldn’t be able to deal with when the going got tough, if I always had it easy.

Having it rough better helps prepare for difficult times, survive them, and then hopefully prosper afterward.

We must see difficulties through. We all want to quit. But quit once and you’ll quit over and over, and never win. That’s why they say:

• When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Go Fishing…oops I meant, The Tough Get Going

• Never Say Die

So the next time you develop some self-pity, remember that “Nobody Said It Was Gonna Be Easy” and that you should still see the positives gained and be content with that. Stop expecting the easy road.

You have to earn it, persevere, and then happiness will give you an occasional glimpse. The goal is of course to always be happy, not just pursue it!
