Never make a defense or apology before you
Never make a defense or apology before you be accused.
- King Charles 1 of Great Britain 1600ish
A quick comment:
First, the quote is significant because a King made it. Perhaps this is one who would know the value of such a thing.
If you make a defense before you are accused, you are considered obviously guilty buy most. If you make no defense before accused you remain in good standing until accused.
If you are never accused, then you remain in good standing rather than cause your own defeat.
What to do with this quote:
The best reason for this method is to avoid being accused. A king or ruler or other leader can be accused of almost anything each day because even the appearance may look other than what it may be.
Therefore you’ll fuel a fire by apologizing in advance of accusation…it makes you, guilty or not, twice as guilty and not even provided a chance of being innocent!
If you think you’re guity, and apologize, you are guilty though sorry. Some may think, better to apologize and not risk appearing too proud to apologize rather than not apologize, though innocent, and then even get credit for being extra careful. Though this seems diligent and zealous, it is foolish.
Perhaps it also shows weakness, over-concern of appearance and opinion, as well as may reveal more about something or improperly reveal it because the accusation may come differently and and pre-revelation may be worse than better, in order to defend against it.
Is this advice for the corrupt? Certainly not! It is for those who can always be accused because of their position, and their appearance, hence even falsely accused.
It says waste not your time on a pre-defense…rather make a defense only when needed when it comes to personal matters and actions actually pointed out because a better defense will result from a specific and clear accusation and therefore will look decisive, strong and true.
Perception is an important aspect here, to be considered when in a position of privilege, even when it does not seem natural at first.
