The Problem With Groupthink According to Nietzsche
When we talk in company we lose our unique tone of voice, and this leads us to make statements which in no way correspond to our real thoughts.
- Friedrich Nietzsche
A quick comment:
This is an interesting saying and is quite true. A group of people doing what is known as groupthink can lead to socialized influence, peer pressure and leadership “command influence” of thinking for reasons that go against logic.
Logical Fallacy and Straw Man Reasoning Often Prevail in Group
This means that the individual’s voice and opinion is drowned out by that of the group, though the group could be miserably and utterly wrong and headed off the cliff without even knowing it.
Worse yet, we may make comments because of influence and pressure that we didn’t intend…because our ego, our sense to belong and our desire to contribute would go so far to take credit and prove stature that even our suggestions become expedient rather than honest, to the detriment of the process and to ourselves, and worse yet to others.
What to do with this quote:
Do not let a group drown out your voice. Instead, either leave the group, speak up, repeat your point or otherwise exude extreme stubbornness and win another to your side, then another, until what meant to say comes out, and what you have to say is made well known and out on the table.
Forget about sounding good or taking credit. Be resolute in what you believe and make it a point of the process.
